The second year of HQI Cares: Implementing BETA HEART® — a multi-year program to advance patient safety in partnership with BETA Healthcare Group and Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) — is off to a good start with 32 hospitals participating.
In year one, 24 hospitals successfully completed a series of milestones and received associated pay-for-performance payments from IEHP. All 24 hospitals from the first year decided to continue with the program in 2023 and are beginning the work on a new set of milestones co-designed by HQI and our partner organizations. Year two has added another eight hospitals, which have so far completed the milestones of onboarding, gap analysis, and the formation of a steering team.
Program Workshop I, which was held in person Feb. 23-24 and attended by all BETA HEART hospitals, provided two days of leading-edge learning on the topics of culture of safety, just culture, and caring for the caregiver. Faculty included Alan Frankel, MD, an internationally recognized high reliability, leadership, and culture change expert; David Marx, JD, CEO, The Just Culture Company; Tim McDonald, MD, JD, a principal author of the CANDOR Toolkit; Alana Iglewics, MD, professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego Health; and Heather Farley, MD, chief wellness officer at ChristianaCare.
