Elder Abuse and Neglect: Inpatient Considerations

This webinar will describe the signs and symptoms of elder and dependent abuse and neglect in patients presenting to the emergency room and hospital.  The presenter will discuss this importance of understanding patients’ pre-hospital function, caregiving and environment in order to assess for the possibility of abuse. Trauma Informed Motivation Interviewing (TIMI), a technique for establishing rapport with victims of abuse will be introduced.

Presentation topics include:

  • To be able to Identify signs of neglect in hospitalized patients
  • To be able to identify traumatic injuries in hospitalized patients
  • To learn to apply Trauma Informed Motivational Interviewing (TIMI) to those affected by abuse

Dr. Gibbs is the Chief of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology and the Ronald Reagan Endowed Chair of Geriatric Medicine at UC Irvine.  She has an extensive and successful history of developing multifaceted programs, bringing together collaborators from both university and community-based organizations.  As former Medical Director of the UC Irvine SeniorHealth Center, a primary care and consultative practice, she has led the development of several innovative programs. In addition, she has developed an expertise and national recognition in the field of elder abuse and currently serves as the Director of UC Irvine’s Center of Excellence in Elder Abuse and Neglect. She has been a member of the Orange County Elder Abuse Forensic Center (EAFC) since its inception in 2001 and has assisted in the medical evaluation of elder and dependent abuse cases for various agencies, including Adult Protective Services, law enforcement agencies and the OC District Attorney’s office.

She also co-chairs the OC Elder Death Review Team with the coroner’s office.  Dr. Gibbs was awarded the Physician of the Year Award by the OC Medical Association, and in 2022 she was awarded the Outstanding Mid-Career Faculty Research Award for the UCI School of Medicine. Perhaps most importantly, she maintains an active geriatric medicine practice which provides the foundation of all other academic activities.
