Patient Safety Awareness Week 2022
In this presentation we will discuss who transgender patients are, and review relevant epidemiologic information about this diverse patient population. We will then discuss the treatments and care plans that many patients undergo in the course of care. This discussion will include a brief overview of surgeries, and what these surgeries require from both patients and the institutions who provide care. We will then reflect on how transcare actually contributes to – and improves, care quality for all (i.e. cis-gender) adult and pediatric patients at an institution. Lastly, we will spend time focusing on how culturally sensitive care is, in fact, a safety issue for trans patients that come to our institutions, and, how not delivering culturally competent care should be a concern for institutions.
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to
- Summarize the key components of a comprehensive interdisciplinary transgender surgery and health program
- Describe common pre and post-operative challenges that institutions face providing genital gender affirming surgery, and how to meet these challenges
- Review examples of how institutional expertise related to transgender surgery and care can translate to improved care for non-transgender patients
- Describe how transgender healthcare quality is a safety issue for both patients and institutions

Maurice M. Garcia, MD, MAS
Associate Clinical Professor of Urologic Surgery

Dr. Garcia is Associate Clinical Professor of Urologic Surgery In Residence at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he serves as Director of the Cedars-Sinai Transgender Surgery and Health Program. Dr. Garcia specializes in genital reconstructive surgery, including gender affirming masculinizing and feminizing genital surgery, neurourology, sexual medicine, and is Director for the Cedars-Sinai Genital Reconstruction Sexual Medicine Surgery Fellowship for urologists, plastic surgeons and gynecologists.
Dr. Garcia completed his residency in Urology and Fellowship training in Andrology and Neurourology at UCSF. He completed a 2-year Master’s Degree in Clinical Research in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at UCSF. He then completed clinical fellowships in masculinizing [FtM] and feminizing [MtF] genital gender affirming surgery in London and Brighton, UK.
He is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and is co-author of the upcoming WPATH Standards of Care clinical guidelines v8.0. He serves as the AUA Core Curriculum Section Editor for Transgender Surgery.
Dr. Garcia directs a productive lab that publishes an average of 10 peer-reviewed research manuscripts per year. His lab is staffed by a research assistant, interested medical students, and residents and fellows from other disciplines at Cedars-Sinai, and is funded in part by an NIH research grant.
