Dr. Gurses is a renowned expert in applying human factors and systems engineering to healthcare to enhance safety, quality, and equity. She is the Founding Director of the Center for Health Care Human Factors at Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and a professor at Johns Hopkins University. With over 130 peer-reviewed publications, her research spans care transitions, diagnostic safety, human-centered AI, infection prevention, and patient-care team partnerships.

She has led numerous federally funded research projects and received prestigious awards, including the Liberty Mutual Safety Award and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences Foundation Award. Her practical contributions include leading the development of CDC training for Ebola preparedness and Project Firstline to improve infection control in peri-operative systems nationwide.
