Opioid use disorder (OUD) is on the rise in the United States. Many patients with OUD also require opioids for the control of pain, and, due to developing tolerance, doses are higher than average. Posing a safety risk. This presentation will introduce the audience to multimodal analgesic strategies that incorporate treatment for OUD.
Presentation topics include:
- Differentiate between opioid use disorder and physical dependence on opioids.
- Discuss strategies involved in providing adequate analgesia in the patient with opioid use disorder.
- List safety measures available to providers to prevent adverse events related to opioid use.

Dr. Andrew Lowe, Pharm.D., APh

Dr. Lowe is a vice president for clinical services at Comprehensive Pharmacy Services, and serves as clinical director and pharmacy practice residency program director at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) in Colton, California. At ARMC, he developed expertise in several administrative areas, including implementation and management of the 340B drug pricing program.
Dr. Lowe received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy, then completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at San Bernardino County Medical Center.
As a licensed Advanced Practice Pharmacist, Dr. Lowe maintains a clinical practice focusing on pain management and on the prevention of prescription drug abuse. He is a faculty member at several schools of pharmacy, physician assistant programs, and one medical school in California.
