Karl Steinberg, MD, CMD, HMDC, HEC-C has been a medical director and chief medical officer for nursing homes, hospice, and home health agencies in the San Diego area since 1995. He holds degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard and a medical degree from The Ohio State University. He completed his family medicine residency at UCSD and is board certified in family medicine and hospice/palliative medicine. Dr. Steinberg also holds certifications as a nursing home and hospice medical director and as a healthcare ethics consultant.
He is the immediate past president of the National POLST Collaborative, a past president of AMDA – The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, and a former chair of the Coalition for Compassionate Care of California. Dr. Steinberg is also a member of the National Advisory Board for the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care and received the 2022 Doris Howell MD Award for Excellence in Palliative Care.
In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for the San Diego County Medical Society, he chairs CMA’s Council on Ethical, Legal, and Judicial Affairs (CELJA). Dr. Steinberg frequently presents at conferences, consults on civil lawsuits, and is known for bringing his poodles on patient rounds when possible.
