When harm reaches the patient, the impact often extends to the caregiver. This session explores how nurse leaders respond to serious medical errors—not just from a systems improvement perspective, but with deep attention to caregiver recovery and resilience.
Drawing on newly published research Dr. Marie Prothero, PhD, RN, FACHE, will share insights on:
- Why do many staff not receive support after an error—and what nurse leaders can do about it
- How peer support, just culture, and structured follow-up mitigate second victim harm
- What nurse leaders believe, do, and need to help clinicians recover while preserving trust
- Real-world examples of recovery practices from acute care settings
Join CHPSO and HQI for this evidence-informed conversation on supporting the people behind the care—and building cultures that learn and heal.
Presentation topics include:
- Recognize the emotional and professional impacts of serious medical errors on nurses and advanced practice providers through the lens of the second victim phenomenon.
- Describe nurse leader attitudes and beliefs about supporting frontline staff post-error, based on recent qualitative and quantitative research.
- Identify evidence-based strategies (e.g., peer support, just culture, root cause participation) that promote staff recovery and reduce attrition.
- Explore how nurse leaders can foster psychological safety and transparency aligned with CHPSO’s commitment to safe and reliable care.
- Apply leadership practices that support caregiver well-being and advance system-wide learning after harm events.
