Addressing Maternal Sepsis: A Comprehensive Approach

October 31, 2024 | 10:00 - 11:00AM PT

Obstetric sepsis is now the number 3 cause of maternal mortality and severe morbidity. But it presents significant challenges for recognition, diagnosis, timely treatment, and patient support. This presentation will describe new approaches for screening and rapid escalation of care to prevent end-organ injury. We will also highlight new patient-centered tools for education, advocacy, and support for all types of severe maternal events. The presentation will preview the 2024 revision of the CMQCC QI Toolkit: Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment of Maternal Sepsis.

Presentation topics include:

  • Identify the reasons that obstetric sepsis is different that sepsis in other populations
  • Understand the rationale for a two-step approach to screening and diagnosis of obstetric sepsis
  • Understand how improving care for sepsis can be a model for addressing multiple causes of Severe Maternal Morbidity
