Appendix Cancer Rates in California Millennials, Generation X Have Climbed Since 2018

Appendiceal adenocarcinoma (appendix cancer) rates are rising in all age groups in the United States, according to a recent study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, but California hospitals have experienced a notable rise from 2018 to 2023 for two generations in particular.

After 2020, rates of appendix cancer in Generation X spiked sharply, peaked in 2022 at nearly 30 cases per million, and declined modestly in 2023. Over the same period, millennials showed consistently lower rates but experienced steady, rapid growth.

Across all years, both Generation X and millennial incidences exceeded the national average, underscoring a persistent and widening disparity.
